     Breast Augmentation Highlights
    1. Saline or Silicone (22 y.o. and older) Breast implants can be used without the previous restrictions.
    2. A Submuscular placement of the implant is preferred for saline implants, silicone can be placed both subglandular and submuscular.
    3. Underarm/Under breast fold/Periareolar incisions can be used for the saline breast implant. Underarm incision cannot be used for the silicone breast implant.
    4. Winter/Early Spring is the preferred time for surgery allowing adequate time for healing before the beach/pool months.

Now FDA Approved for Breast Augmentation!!

The Mentor MemoryGel™ implants you've been reading and hearing about have been successfully used and trusted for 20 years by millions women all over the world. Why? Because MemoryGel™ breast implants feel more like natural breast tissue - without compromising reliability or safety. After almost two decades of research and testing with surgeons and patients, MemoryGel™ breast implants are now available at the Florida Plastic Surgery Institute.

Why this picture matters to you:

We have cut a MemoryGel™ breast implant in half to plainly show how the material holds together uniformly (no leaking) while still retaining the natural give of breast tissue. It does this because of a cohesive, gelatin-like substance that acts as a solid rather than a liquid.

Saline or Silicone... How do I choose?

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on November 17, 2006 the approval and availability of silicone gel breast implants, ending a 14 year ban on the use of silicone breast implants for cosmetic surgery. Now all women 22 years and older seeking cosmetic breast augmentation will be able to select silicone breast implants. The availability of silicone gel implants will create new options for women considering breast surgery for the first time and for those who have had previous surgery but are seeking new replacements or revisions.

Each year, surgical techniques and breast implants themselves are continuously being refined, increasing the safety and reliability of the procedure. With the continued scientific research and development of proven methods, further advancements of breast implant options will be made in stride with the continuing medical education of qualified cosmetic plastic surgeons specializing in breast surgery. As time moves on, the goal will be to have more optimal results reported by patients that in turn will reduce the need for re-operation.

Breast implants can serve one or more of a number of purposes; breast cancer victims can use breast implants for reconstructive purposes after mastectomy, or women with asymmetrical breasts may use a single breast implant to balance the difference in size.

Following pregnancy, many women opt for breast implant surgery to correct reductions in breast size, resulting from fluctuating hormones. And of course many breast implant candidates are simply interested in creating a more flattering contour.

It is worth explaining the differences between a silicone gel-filled and a saline-filled breast implant, which is an alternative to the silicone gel implant. The outer shell of both silicone and saline implants is made of a solid silicone material. Solid silicone is widely used in implantable medical devices. In contrast, silicone gel implants are filled with silicone gel, which is a semi-solid. Saline-filled implants are filled with the same kind of salt water that is used in I.V. fluids.

    Silicone Implants

Silicone implants have a silicone rubber shell that is filled with a fixed amount of silicone gel. Silicone implants come in smooth or textured shell surface and vary in shape, profile, volume, shell thickness, and number of shell lumens. Most silicone gel-filled implants are not adjustable which is one disadvantage compared to saline implants.

In 1999, a landmark report, undertaken by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) concluded that silicone implants do not cause major health problems such lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. And while no one can ignore the fact that silicone – and saline – breast implants may cause localized problems for some patients, numerous scientific studies over the years have shown that silicone gel-filled implants are both safe and effective for breast augmentation and reconstruction. In fact, silicone gel breast implants are widely used in 60 countries around the world including Europe, and now are available for use in the U.S. market.

In the past decade, a number of independent studies have examined whether silicone gel-filled breast implants are associated with connective tissue disease or cancer. The studies, including a report by the Institute of Medicine, have concluded there is no convincing evidence that breast implants are associated with either of these diseases. However, these issues will be studied further in the post-approval studies conducted by Mentor Corporation and Allergan (manufacturers of FDA-approved silicone gel breast implants).

It is hoped that any woman considering breast augmentation surgery will read about the procedure and arrive at the decision that is best for her both in the short and long term. The Florida Plastic Surgery Institute offers both Saline and Silicone Breast implants and can assist in your choice of a breast implant that best meets your needs.
